When self-confessed sugar addict Hannah Bellis went to the doctor about her skin, she was surprised when she was advised to cut the sweet stuff out of her diet. But, as Hannah found, quitting sugar was easier said than done.

Last year, when Hannah went to speak to a doctor about a rash on her face, she was advised to give up sugar.
“It was a really hard decision for me, because I love sugar,” says Hannah. “And I’ve always found that it’s a good mood booster, as everyone thinks of course.
“The only reason I really came to it is because I had this problem with this skin and these funny red dots had appeared and slowly travelled all over my face – it was quite a bad rash.
“I’ve always prided myself on having good skin and I don’t wear make up because I’ve always thought: let my vitality shine through. Your skin is a good indicator of your health.”
The doctor thought that Hannah’s skin condition was seborrheic dermatitis – where your body reacts to bacteria which is always on your skin.
He asked Hannah how much sugar she ate in a week and she said five times: “It was really a whole lot more than that.”
Hannah decided to have a go at giving up sugar. “It was a big deal because I felt that I thrived on sugar,” she says.
